FROM DARKNESS TO DAWN

In 1997, to celebrate the 50th year of India's independence Kalavardhini has produced this unique group choreography based on Pt. Nehru's famous book "Discovery of India". Conceived and directed by Dr. Smt. Sucheta Chapekar, this group production showcases the important landmarks in ancient Indian history. It uses free dance technique with traditional gesture language and is based on Indian classical instrumental music. It can truly be called a representative of modern approach towards Indian classical dance. Due to it’s classic theme having everlasting value this is one of Kalavardhini’s star productions which has staged over 20 shows in various parts of India. On 26th January 2009 it was staged in Mumbai in Sangeet Natak Academy’s dance drama festival.

LEELA DARU

‘Leela’ means play of imagination and ‘Daru’ is a meaningful dance choreography with accent on pure rhythmic dance. This is an imaginative presentation of eight different choreographies making minimum use of the word element. Yet another prestigious and everfresh group presentation by Kalavardhini Sankul which combines classical Bharata Natyam technique with contemporary approach. Instead of a theme, Leela Daru exploits various ideas in the most interesting way.

LAYA-LEENA

Laya or Rhythm can be felt within the body of a human being as well as outside. This group production based on the contemporary dance technique exploits the many dimensions of Laya and its impact on human beings. The concept, choreography, and direction is by Arundhati Patwardhan and Manasi Pimple.

URJA

Sun is the prime source of energy for life around us. Man with his intellect, in his evolutionary path, understood the power of this energy and tried to command it. This duet presentation makes imaginative use of the strong and flowing lines of the Bharat Natyam and Kathak techniques respectively. It puts forward a question whether this energy is for creation and betterment of life or its destruction? Concept and choreography by Arundhati Patwardhan.

NAYIKA

This presentation depicts a woman in love, reacting differently in eight different situations traditionally known as Ashta Nayika. Though the technique is pure Bharata Natyam, Nritta or pure rhythmic dance is used here in a creative manner to generate different moods personified by the different Nayika. This is the unique feature of this full length production which combines solo as well as group choreography. Concept and direction by Dr. Smt. Sucheta Chapekar.

RITU SAMHARAM

Pure rhythmic dance is used for mood creation and innovative introductions are done through vernacular poetry maintaining the ethereal quality of the original dance-drama.

NANDANADNAN

Various facets of Vatsalya Rasa flow through this production. Concept and choreography – Sucheta Chapekar and Arundhati Patwardhan.

KATHA EKA NRITYA SHAILICHI

A novel group production which interestingly brings to life the story of the origin and development of the popular dance style of Bharat Natyam. The presentation of the story is done in a very novel manner wherein the ‘dance’ itself becomes a character and talks to the audience while the different dance visuals are woven in a single theme. Concept and script – Ketakee Nene.

Apart from these productions Kalavardhini can present many types of solo or group performances in traditional Bharat Natyam and Nritya Ganga style. And can also present specially commissioned thematic programs required for special occasions, using classical approach with contemporary technique.
